So when you think of Jesus do you think of someone who is pursuing you? Some people think of him as indifferent or not caring. Death Cab For Cutie’s song “I Will Possess Your Heart” may actually be a little closer to the truth. Read the lyrics and watch the video if you like. Today, just think about a love that doesn’t give up.
How I wish you could see the potential, the potential of you and me
It’s like a book elegantly bound, but in a language that you can’t read – just yet
You gotta spend some time–love, you gotta spend some time with me
And I know that you’ll find–love, I will possess your heart (x2)
There are days when outside your window, I see my reflection as I slowly pass
And I long for this mirrored perspective, when we’ll be lovers, lovers at last
You gotta spend some time–love, you gotta spend some time with me
And I know that you’ll find–love, I will possess your heart(x2)
I will possess your heart (x2)
You reject my advances and desperate pleas
I won’t let you, let me down so easily, so easily
You gotta spend some time–love, you gotta spend some time with me
And I know that you’ll find–love, I will possess your heart (x3)
I will possess your heart (x2)

As I started listening to this song more and more over the past week, all I could think about what asking this question…”I wonder if Death Cab knows how close their lyrics are to the heart of Jesus?”…I can’t help but picture Jesus singing these words to all of us as a reminder of HOW he wants to be in our lives…and he’s not just singing to good folks, or church people, or pastors, or priests…I think He’s singing it to every human with breath in their lungs…and He’s singing it every day…
It just took me so long to figure out that God and Jesus love everybody RIGHT now…not some future, more moral, better decision making, less sinful version of us…but the jacked up people we all tend to be…He loves us right now…and so I keep wondering, if learning that Jesus loves me RIGHT NOW, broken pieces and all, has meant that much to me…what can learning that do to other people…
and so I ask you…what do you think God thinks of you?…because I think His thoughts on us are gorgeous…and I think Death Cab did a pretty sweet job of painting a little piece of the heart of Christ…
